Cocopah Teams Wins Future City Award at National CompetitionThe Future City Competition is a national team-based education program designed for 7th and 8th grade students. Working in teams of three, the students are required to create a city of the future. Cocopah Middle School’s team Luna Llueva – Joey Horowitz, Eric Peshkin and Benjamin Steen – won the National Professional Engineering Award for Best Residential Zone sponsored by the Chinese Institute of Engineers (CIE) – USA at the National Future City Competition that was held February 13-16 in Washington, D.C. More than 3,000 members of this professional engineering society reviewed comprehensive narratives submitted by the 39 competing teams.
The award was presented to Luna Llueva for the "Design that allows strategic placement of residential zones for maximum return for quality of life issues in residential zones." The selection of Luna Llueva was made via an Internet voting system. The CIE placed a description of all of the entries (39 regions) using the narratives as a basis. Their members were given the opportunity to evaluate each description and cast a vote for the team that best satisfied the award criteria. Of more than 30,000 votes cast, Luna Llueva was chosen as the best submission.
The team will share its complete presentation to the Society of Military Engineers on February 25 at 11:30 a.m. at the Residence Inn at West Gate, 7350 N. Zanjers Blvd., Glendale 85305, along with the other regional winners, also from Cocopah.
Jan Speisman, a gifted teacher at Cocopah Middle School, is the team’s advisor/mentor. Kerry Wilcoxon, P.E., City of Phoenix Transportation and Safety, is the team’s engineer mentor. ![]() Mohave CGP Students!!CONGRATULATIONS on a job well done! Recently, Mohave was well represented by 12 teams from Ms. Whiffen's Independent Investigations at the state Future City Competition held from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, January 23rd . Each team of three students along with their engineering mentor and teacher, had worked hard for months producing a computer model of their imagined city, written a research essay on providing affordable temporary housing after a natural or financial disaster, written an abstract pointing out the major innovations in their sustainable city, built a large physical model of their city out of recycled materials, and designed a presentation which they delivered in front of a team of engineering judges. Extra special congratulations go out to Elite City with team members: Matt Stark, Grayson Meadows, and Eli Trahan! They were selected for the final round and presented to a panel of celebrity engineering judges on the auditorium stage in front of the huge crowd including the other 126 teams and their invited guests.
